Film Poll: Terrence Malick

It has been a while since I handed out a poll question here at The Most Beautiful Fraud in the World, but to all those who have enjoyed such things in the past, not to worry for the poll hath returned.  For the return of the poll (which will be a monthly event from now on - even though I am a few days late in getting this one started) we look at one of the least prolific but most artistic directors of the past forty years.  That man of course is the enigmatic Terrence Malick.  Your mission, should you decide to accept it (and c'mon, why wouldn't you?) is to name the film you think is Malick's best and/or your favourite.  Malick made his first film 38 years ago but there are only five films to choose from (all of which I personally think are stunning in their own way).  You will have until August 31st at midnight to make your choice.  All you need do is go over to the poll gadget in the sidebar and make your choice (you are free to make comments - in fact I warmly welcome them - but votes made in the comment section will not be counted).  So go to it.

It's a tough choice for me between Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line but I chose the former.

I would say my least favorite is The New World.

The New World is actually my second favourite (after Tree of Life). I am guessing though that The New World will probably come in last because I think that is a lot of people's least fave Malick.

I also had a tough time deciding between Days of Heaven and TTRL. However if I have to choose only one, it's The Thin Red Line for me. It had the greatest impact on me the first time I saw it, and I feel like it is perhaps Malick's most philosophical work, given the backdrop of the absurdity of war and existential themes.

So far...

1. Days of Heaven
2. The Thin Red Line
3. The Tree of Life
4. Badlands
5. The New World (in any cut of the film).

They're all great and each all have something to offer. They're all really works of art that will last for years.

Days of Heaven is my favorite film of all time. One of those films that I'm always up to watching no matter what. I've been known to just rewatch bits and then end up seeing the whole film.

I'd rank the rest of Malick's work:

1. Days of Heaven
2. The New World (Theatrical)
3. The Thin Red Line
4. Badlands
5. The New World (Extended)
6. The Tree of Life

I was tempted to go with The Tree of Life, but that's probably because I'm still movie-high from my one viewing of it. I'll need further viewings before making that decision.

Anyway, Malick's such an awesome badass who owns the cinematic arts with every turn at bat, even his "least" is still pretty goddamn masterful -- If I could, I'd list his films horizontally, because vertical seems disrespectful to the guy ;)

1. The Thin Red Line
2. The Tree of Life
3. The New World (extended)
4. The New World (theatrical)
5. Days of Heaven
6. Badlands
